“Progress Made in Restoring Power at N.L.’s Bay d’Espoir Plant”

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has reported that progress is being made in restoring power at the Bay d’Espoir hydroelectric generating plant, despite a power warning still being in effect for Newfoundland. Teams have been successful in removing significant amounts of frazil ice throughout Saturday, with divers managing to clear ice sheets as large as mattresses.

Currently, only one of the plant’s four penstocks remains blocked, allowing six out of the seven generators to be activated gradually. While acknowledging the ongoing challenges, Hydro’s Rob Collett expressed optimism about the situation, stating that significant progress has been made.

However, Newfoundland Power’s Byron Chubbs emphasized the need for customers to be prepared for potential rotating power outages and urged continued energy conservation efforts. He requested customers to reduce unnecessary energy consumption, such as lowering thermostats and minimizing the use of large appliances like clothes dryers.

Regarding the status of schools on Monday, Collett mentioned the need to proceed cautiously and steadily before determining the operational plans. Education Minister Paul Dinn confirmed that schools are scheduled to open on Monday, with updates to be communicated through official channels if any changes occur.

N.L. Hydro also addressed the impact of cold temperatures on power imports, indicating challenges in importing power due to extreme weather conditions in Nova Scotia. Efforts are ongoing to enhance power generation capacity on the island, with repair work being carried out at the Holyrood facility.

In response to the conservation efforts to prevent power shortages reminiscent of the DarkNL event in January 2014, municipalities and businesses across the province have taken proactive measures. Various facilities have been closed or operated with reduced power consumption, with businesses like the Avalon Mall and White Hills Resort adjusting operations to support energy conservation initiatives.

Updates on the power situation and ongoing efforts will be provided through social media channels, with a focus on ensuring continued progress in restoring power supply stability across Newfoundland and Labrador.
