“Charlottetown Farmers’ Market Reopens to Crowds and Praise”

Islanders crowded into the temporary setting for the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market over the weekend, as it officially opened on North River Road in the former Sporting Intentions location. The market’s regular venue had suffered significant damage in a fire on Christmas Day.

Both customers and vendors expressed their delight at the market resuming operations, although they acknowledged there were some initial challenges to address. Sarah Briggs, a frequent patron, praised the new spaciousness of the venue and commended the swift relocation process.

Despite the positive reception, Briggs pointed out that there was some confusion regarding the entrance and parking arrangements at the new site. Travis Cummiskey, the market’s president, mentioned that additional staff had been assigned to assist with directing traffic in the parking area to mitigate these issues.

Cummiskey revealed that efforts were underway to return to the permanent location by the year’s end. He also noted that the current location lacked full electrical capabilities, resulting in some vendors not having their lighting fully operational yet.

The market president expressed satisfaction with the turnout, especially considering the slower pace typical of January. He highlighted ongoing collaboration with the building’s landlord to enhance facilities for vendors, such as adding electrical outlets and ventilation systems.

One vendor, Makena Tarichia of Out of Africa, mentioned the challenge of preparing food off-site due to inadequate ventilation. Despite this setback, she sold out of her offerings and expressed hope for improved cooking facilities in the near future.

Another vendor, Darren Matheson of Trout River Pottery, lauded the new space’s aesthetics and shared his fortune in salvaging some products post-fire. He emphasized the challenges faced by other vendors in replacing lost machinery and equipment.

Both vendors and customers alike expressed gratitude for the market’s swift recovery and optimistic outlook for the future.
