B.C. Highway Patrol and Shawnigan Lake RCMP officers have reported a fatal car accident that has led to the closure of Highway 1 near the 1200 block, south of Mill Bay, B.C. Sadly, one woman lost her life at the scene, while the circumstances surrounding the crash are currently being investigated by the authorities.
The status of the three other individuals involved in the accident remains uncertain, as per an RCMP press release. It was disclosed that the collision involved two vehicles in a head-on crash, resulting in one vehicle tumbling down an embankment and the other catching fire.
The B.C. Highway Patrol’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (CARS) team has been called in to assist with the inquiry into the incident. A portion of Highway 1 near the Malahat Summit was shut down on Saturday afternoon, with an alternative route through Shawnigan Lake road provided by DriveBC. The road was anticipated to reopen by 8 p.m. PT.
RCMP Cpl. Brett Urano mentioned that evidence was being gathered at the scene as part of the early stages of the investigation. He emphasized the determination to ascertain the precise cause and contributing factors of this tragic event. Urano urged anyone who witnessed the collision or possesses dash cam footage to reach out to the Shawnigan Lake RCMP.
