“Thousands in Canada Rally for Iranian Protesters”

Thousands of people gathered in Richmond Hill, Ont., on Saturday to express support for protesters in Iran who are challenging the nation’s economic crisis and the governing regime. Soheila Zarrabi, a participant in the noon demonstration at Yonge Street and 16th Avenue, emphasized the unique nature of the ongoing protests, highlighting that they are primarily about freedom rather than economic concerns. The demonstrations, which have escalated into a broader movement against the government, have resulted in at least 65 fatalities, according to The Associated Press.

Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s former shah and exiled Crown Prince, has backed the protests, urging for further demonstrations. In contrast, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has labeled the protesters as “terrorists,” accusing them of acting to appease the U.S. president. The government’s response to the protests has included cutting off internet access, blocking international calls, and detaining over 2,300 individuals.

The Richmond Hill demonstration reportedly drew an estimated crowd of over 10,000 people, as confirmed by York Regional Police. Lily Pourzand, an Iranian community activist focusing on women’s rights, highlighted the protesters’ strong demand for a change in the existing regime. Pourzand emphasized that the blackout of internet services is a tactic historically used to suppress dissent and prevent the world from witnessing the unfolding events.

Salar Gholami, one of the organizers of the Richmond Hill march, expressed concern for his family members in Iran, whom he has not been able to contact. Demonstrator Alex Family conveyed optimism that the current protests would be the catalyst for lasting change in Iran, criticizing the government for diverting the country’s resources towards supporting terrorism and destabilizing the region. The demonstrators echoed calls for freedom and a better future for Iran and the global community.
