Labrador MP Frustrated by Wabush Airport Woes

Labrador MP Philip Earle has expressed frustration over the recent disruptions at Wabush Airport for the third time in three months. The issues arose due to a notice limiting the airport’s centerline to 90 feet on Wednesday, preventing PAL Airline’s Q 400 aircraft, which require 100 feet, from landing. The restriction was later amended to 100 feet on Thursday, allowing flights to resume.

Earle highlighted the impact on travelers, including himself, as delays caused by the restrictions resulted in an eight-hour delay for passengers and forced him to cancel his scheduled meetings at Wabush. These disruptions follow previous incidents in October when the airport services briefly shut down due to changes in firefighting service requirements and in December when extreme weather led to flight cancellations and stranded passengers.

Transport Canada emphasized that safety is a priority during winter operations at Wabush Airport. Air carriers determine flight delays or cancellations based on safety protocols and real-time conditions. Despite ongoing challenges, Earle assured efforts are underway to address the root causes of the airport’s issues, promising significant changes ahead.

Acknowledging the importance of Wabush Airport as a critical infrastructure, Earle stressed the need for swift resolution to prevent further disruptions for travelers. He noted that compared to other airports in similar environments, such as Blanc-Sablon and St. Anthony, Wabush Airport uniquely faces these recurring problems, causing undue stress to passengers, including those with crucial medical appointments.
