Trump Defies Congress in Iran Ceasefire Extension

US President Donald Trump announced the end of hostilities with Iran, asserting his authority to continue the conflict without congressional approval. Trump informed Congress that there had been no recent exchanges of fire with Iran since the ceasefire began on February 28, 2026. According to the 1973 War Powers Resolution, a president has a 60-day limit for military actions before seeking authorization from Congress or requesting an extension due to military necessity.

Despite a proposal for negotiations from Iran to Pakistani mediators, which was promptly turned down by Trump, the conflict notification to Congress was made 48 hours after the initial airstrikes, triggering a 60-day countdown ending on May 1. Trump, considering the War Powers Resolution unconstitutional, highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Iran and the need for additional time due to the ceasefire.

During an event in Florida, Trump emphasized the importance of completing the conflict properly and avoiding premature withdrawal. However, Democratic lawmakers criticized Trump’s stance, arguing that the ceasefire did not align with the 1973 law and pointing to the continued deployment of US ships blockading Iranian oil exports as evidence of ongoing hostility.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen criticized Trump for lacking a clear strategy or exit plan for the conflict, urging him to adhere to the legal deadline for action. Trump’s Republican allies have consistently supported his position, blocking resolutions seeking an end to the war. The Iran conflict has resulted in casualties, economic disruptions, and public dissatisfaction, with upcoming elections shaping the political landscape.

While the US Constitution grants Congress the power to declare war, presidents have historically initiated short-term operations without formal declarations. Trump received briefings on potential military actions to pressure Iran for negotiations, with the option to restart the 60-day clock if hostilities resume. The Vietnam War prompted the War Powers Resolution, underscoring the need for congressional oversight in military engagements.
