“Boil Water Advisory Lift Expected in Pelican Narrows”

The emergency response manager of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation anticip the pending lift of the boil water advisory in Pelican Narrows within the next day. Due to a critical failure in the raw water intake system on Sunday night, the First Nation, comprising more than 4,000 members, resorted to sourcing water from neighboring communities. This led to an urgent need to conserve water to prevent system shutdown and subsequent damage.

Despite challenges faced by community members in accessing water, volunteers and locals took the initiative to distribute water door-to-door for drinking and cooking purposes. Concerns arose about a potential freeze and water shortage in the pump, but as of now, there is no risk of evacuation.

In a positive development, the boil water advisory is expected to be lifted soon. Divers from AECOM are scheduled to examine the infrastructure in the lake on Saturday. The lake intake, operational since 1981, encountered unprecedented issues on Sunday. The inspection will focus on the 200-milliliter line submerged in up to 20 feet of water, including checking for blockages or damages at the screen end. If the intake screen shows no visible issues, further inspection will be conducted on the 500-foot pipe at the lake bottom.

Despite potential challenges and costs associated with repairs, the community is poised to resume normal operations next week, ensuring a return to stability.
