“Legendary Hamilton Studio Celebrates 50 Years”

A renowned recording studio in Hamilton, pivotal in the careers of music legends such as Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash, is set to commemorate 50 years in the music industry this year. Established in 1976 by Daniel Lanois, Bob Lanois, and Bob Doidge, Grant Avenue Studio is housed in a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E. Over the decades, it has drawn in top musical talents from both Canada and around the globe.

In 2023, Mike Bruce, along with Debbie Bruce and Marco Montano, took over ownership of the studio. Mike Bruce describes the studio as a living museum, exuding a palpable energy accumulated over five decades of history. Notably, the studio’s unique setup, initially built without much expertise but transformed into a soundproof gem through determination and experimentation, has left an indelible mark on the music scene.

Local music expert Jamie Tennant, who serves as the program director at CFMU, McMaster University’s radio station, characterizes Grant Avenue Studio as an ever-evolving entity, gathering momentum through its storied past. The studio’s appeal lies in its historical significance, having hosted renowned artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno, the influential British musician and producer.

Despite few updates since its inception in the 1970s and ’80s, Grant Avenue Studio boasts a vintage charm, with unique features like sand-filled window wells for soundproofing. Celebrating its 50th year, the studio remains a hub for diverse musical talents, as highlighted by Bruce’s enthusiasm for the vibrant music scene in Hamilton.

To mark the milestone, Grant Avenue Studio plans to continue its series of intimate YouTube concerts, showcasing local artists and embracing the essence of live performances. With its vintage MCI JH-500C console, reminiscent of iconic rock albums such as Hotel California and Back in Black, the studio stands as a testament to a blend of history, technology, and artistic energy that continues to attract artists.

In addition to the YouTube series, the studio has lined up various events, including an anniversary party, an exhibition at Hamilton Civic Museums, and the return of the Road to Supercrawl contest. This competition offers 25 bands the opportunity to win a recording package and a mainstage performance at the Supercrawl music and arts festival, further solidifying Grant Avenue Studio’s legacy in the Canadian music industry.
