A former employee of Beast Industries is taking legal action against MrBeast’s media production company, alleging wrongful termination after returning from maternity leave and facing years of sexual harassment and gender bias in the workplace. The lawsuit was filed by Lorrayne Mavromatis in a federal court in North Carolina, accusing MrBeastYouTube and GameChanger 24/7 of violating federal laws related to job-protected leave for childbirth and medical reasons. Mavromatis also lodged a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, citing discrimination based on sex, pregnancy, and retaliation.
Mavromatis claimed that she continued to work tirelessly after giving birth, even attending to work matters while in the delivery room. She expressed feeling pressured to return to work immediately and was subsequently terminated less than three weeks after resuming full-time duties.
A spokesperson for Beast Industries dismissed the lawsuit as a publicity-seeking act, asserting that Mavromatis’s role was eliminated during a restructuring process led by the new head of ecommerce. The company provided evidence of Mavromatis being informed about her rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
The lawsuit sheds light on the internal culture of the company affiliated with YouTube’s renowned content creator, MrBeast, as the media empire ventures into new territories such as television and financial services. The company has been in the spotlight for past instances of workplace misconduct and harassment, prompting recent efforts to address internal issues.
Amidst these developments, MrBeast has expanded his presence beyond YouTube, featuring in various entertainment platforms and events. Beast Industries, with approximately 700 employees, is actively recruiting top industry executives to drive growth and diversify its offerings.
Mavromatis’s legal challenge coincides with an upcoming recognition event where MrBeast is set to be honored as one of Time100’s most influential figures. The lawsuit alleges a demanding work environment at Beast Industries, citing a company guide promoting long work hours and intense dedication to the job.
The legal dispute underscores broader concerns about workplace accountability and the need to address systemic issues of harassment and retaliation. The Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund is backing Mavromatis’s case, emphasizing the importance of breaking the cycle of silence and fostering a culture that prioritizes employee safety and well-being.
