Elena Rybakina claimed victory at the Australian Open by defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the final match on Saturday, reversing her defeat in the same event back in 2023. Despite losing the second set and falling behind 3-0 in the third, Rybakina staged a remarkable comeback by winning five consecutive games to clinch the title, sealing the win with an ace on her first championship point.
This triumph marked Rybakina’s second major title, following her Wimbledon victory in 2022. While Sabalenka had since secured three more major titles, Rybakina had faced a decline in her results until recently, when she reached the final of this tournament after a significant win over Sabalenka at the WTA Finals last November.
Rybakina, who hails from Moscow but competes for Kazakhstan, expressed her gratitude towards her coaching team, particularly Stefano Vukov, for their support in her journey to success. Sabalenka, on the other hand, faced disappointment with back-to-back losses in the Australian Open final.
Throughout the intense match, Rybakina showcased her attacking prowess and strong serving skills, tallying six aces and effectively defending against breakpoint opportunities. In contrast, Sabalenka’s vocal intensity and self-encouragement were evident, while Rybakina remained composed and focused on her game.
As the final moments unfolded, Rybakina’s performance spoke for itself, leading to a well-deserved victory. The match concluded with a display of sportsmanship as the opponents embraced at the net, with Rybakina celebrating her win with a gesture of triumph to the crowd.
