During a trial for a double murder case, the court heard from a witness who placed the accused at the crime scene, testifying to hearing a woman’s scream and two gunshots. Zachery Trevors, a crucial witness for the prosecution in Janson Baker’s trial in Moncton’s Court of King’s Bench, shared details. Baker, aged 29, is facing two charges of first-degree murder for the alleged killing of Bernard Saulnier, 78, and Rose-Marie Saulnier, 74, in Dieppe on September 7, 2019.
Trevors revealed that he and Baker were friends who spent time together frequently in 2019. On the evening of September 6, 2019, Baker drove Trevors to various locations in Riverview and Moncton in a white Hyundai Elantra before heading to a residence on Amirault Street in Dieppe. Trevors testified that after a failed attempt to make contact at the house, Baker went inside while he went to the back alone. From a vantage point in a sunroom, Trevors saw Baker in a bedroom through a sliding door, seemingly holding a gun with his arms raised.
After hearing two gunshots following a scream, Trevors witnessed Baker briefly concealing a handgun under the driver’s seat of the car. Upset and unwilling to be involved, Trevors mentioned throwing a wallet out of the vehicle near a hardware store in Dieppe while leaving the scene. The jury was informed that Rose-Marie Saulnier’s wallet was discovered near the Home Hardware in Dieppe on September 7, 2019.
Upon returning to Trevors’ residence, Baker allegedly threatened him not to disclose the events of that night. Trevors also recounted Baker confessing to stealing jewelry from the house and being rewarded with a gold chain. Another witness testified that Baker was instructed to target Sylvio Saulnier, a son of the deceased couple, by Nicholas Bain. The trial revealed Baker’s involvement in a drug network linked to Sylvio Saulnier, who was blamed for police raids before the Saulniers’ deaths.
Trevors further detailed that the car used by Baker was later towed after being left outside his residence and Baker’s subsequent arrest. Despite Baker’s request to destroy the vehicle, Trevors refused any involvement. During cross-examination, Trevors denied entering the Saulnier home and refuted Munro’s allegation of being a suspect in the killings. Trevors clarified that he faced no charges related to the deaths and received no benefits for cooperating with the investigation.
Throughout his testimony, Trevors expressed concern for his safety and revealed hiding to avoid testifying initially. Subsequently, he was held in custody after being located by the authorities. Baker’s trial commenced in January and is anticipated to run until late March.
