“Unofficial ‘Dance Moms’ Musical in the Works”

A visit to the Abby Lee Dance Company was an emotional rollercoaster, with tears, tutus, and mothers squabbling over their young dancers’ positions. The reality show “Dance Moms” that aired in the 2010s documented the journey of a group of talented young dancers and their dramatic mothers navigating intense training and competitions.

At the heart of the show was Abby Lee Miller, known for her tough coaching style, which involved critiquing the dancers’ performances and ranking them weekly on a pyramid. Some of Miller’s memorable lines included “save your tears for the pillow” and “I wasn’t put on this Earth to make her feel special.”

Years after the show’s conclusion, a parody musical inspired by “Dance Moms” is in the works. Titled “The Pyramid: An Unauthorized ‘Dance Moms’ Musical,” the idea originated from college friends James Stryska and Isabel Grace Blankenship during a visit to a thrift store in Greensboro, N.C. They, along with a team of fellow “Dance Moms” enthusiasts, are developing the musical.

The project gained momentum after their original song, “My Little Kendall,” went viral on TikTok in 2023, garnering over five million views and drawing support from former cast members. L.A.-based producer Logan Clark, who had previous experience with “Dance Moms,” joined as a creative producer, along with Tye Blue, the director of the successful parody musical “Titaníque.”

The enduring popularity of “Dance Moms” is evident through its viral presence on platforms like TikTok, where clips and moments from the show continue to engage new audiences. Former cast members like Maddie Ziegler and JoJo Siwa have transitioned into successful careers post-“Dance Moms,” staying in the spotlight through various ventures.

The creators of the parody musical aim to capture the essence of the show while highlighting the relationships and emotions behind the scenes. They are actively sharing their progress on social media and crowdfunding the project to bring “Dance Moms” back into the spotlight, celebrating the unique dynamics of mother-daughter relationships portrayed on the show.
