A major winter storm that hit the Greater Toronto Area on Sunday led all school boards in the region to declare a snow day for Monday. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) announced closures across all schools and administrative facilities due to ongoing snow removal efforts. Exams scheduled for Monday at TCDSB were rescheduled to Thursday.
Similarly, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and York Region District School Board also closed their schools and offices for Monday, with exams being rescheduled accordingly. The York Region Catholic District School Board, Peel District School Board, and Durham District School Board all followed suit by canceling classes and transportation services for Monday.
Additionally, the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board, French public Viamonde School Board, and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir announced closures for schools and daycare facilities in various regions due to severe weather conditions. High school exams were postponed in several districts.
The City of Toronto declared a significant weather event in response to the storm and activated its snow event response plan. Environment Canada issued an orange winter storm warning forecasting significant snowfall across the GTA, with areas like Toronto and Mississauga potentially experiencing over 60 centimeters of snow accumulation.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow provided updates on snow operations, stating that the city had deployed numerous snowplows and staff to clear roads and sidewalks. The city manager, Paul Johnson, highlighted the expected challenges in navigating the city on Monday due to the storm aftermath.
