A Toronto parks and recreation worker passed away during work hours on Wednesday morning following a suspected medical issue at a community center in Scarborough. The City of Toronto confirmed the incident, stating that the employee died while on duty at the Oakridge Community Recreation Centre. Authorities, including Toronto Police and Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, are conducting investigations into the matter.
Russell Baker, the city’s spokesperson, expressed condolences to the deceased employee’s family, friends, and co-workers. He acknowledged the emotional impact of the loss and assured support for those affected. Toronto Police reported responding to a medical emergency call near Pharmacy and Danforth avenues but refrained from disclosing details due to privacy regulations unless a criminal element is suspected.
The Ministry of Labour has been informed of the fatality, with an assigned inspector initiating an investigation, as per spokesperson Radi Bridge’s statement. CUPE Local 79, representing city workers, lamented the loss in a social media post, highlighting that the employee was alone at the time of the incident. The union emphasized the need for answers and raised concerns about the worker being unaccompanied.
Referring to the city’s policy on working alone, the union stressed the importance of worker safety and immediate assistance during emergencies. It pledged to collaborate with the city to enforce existing policies and evaluate their adequacy. Mayor Olivia Chow extended condolences and affirmed the city’s cooperation with the Ministry of Labour’s inquiries, expressing solidarity with the deceased worker’s loved ones and community.
