Trevor Burton, a regular visitor to the rink, has encountered three men who frequently use the changing room to warm up during bitter cold spells with wind chill values below -30. He advocates for finding a solution to help them secure stable housing so they can rebuild their lives.
The Initiative for Neighbourly Nights (INN) is proposing transitional housing for up to 30 individuals on Steinbach’s Main Street. The proposal includes providing beds in apartments for those facing emergencies, along with support staff for security, addiction, nursing, and community outreach.
With only limited space for four people overnight, Today House, operated by Steinbach Community Outreach, is the current emergency shelter in the city. However, there is a pressing need for more comprehensive solutions to address homelessness, especially during extreme weather conditions.
A draft community safety and well-being plan recently presented to Steinbach city council underscores the importance of assisting homeless individuals as a top priority. The plan suggests hiring a dedicated community safety and well-being coordinator to implement its recommendations.
