“South African Activist Condemns Anti-Migrant Violence”

In an exclusive interview, Sharon Ekambaram sheds light on the current situation in South Africa amid rising anti-migrant sentiments. While some individuals are resorting to violence and intimidation to force migrants out of the country, others like Ekambaram are actively supporting those seeking refuge.

Ekambaram, a member of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia, is part of various organizations opposing the anti-migrant rhetoric and violence that have gripped the nation. Since the protests commenced in April, five fatalities have been reported, with both documented and undocumented migrants facing forced evictions and property damage.

Protests erupted across South Africa as demonstrators, armed with sticks, clashed with law enforcement in a bid to enforce a self-imposed deadline for undocumented immigrants to exit the country. President Cyril Ramaphosa has disavowed the arbitrary ultimatum, urging protesters to refrain from violence. Ekambaram contends that the government’s failure to address widespread unemployment and inequality has exacerbated the situation by unfairly blaming migrants.

The South African Council of Churches, in collaboration with various organizations, provided essential support to affected individuals, including food, diapers, legal assistance, and healthcare services. Despite the challenges, Ekambaram emphasizes the importance of solidarity in combating the minority groups exploiting social issues for divisive purposes.

The recent wave of hostility towards migrants is attributed to political parties scapegoating them during the 2024 elections, deflecting attention from corruption and mismanagement issues. Ekambaram stresses the urgent need for governmental accountability in tackling inequality and reviving the economy, rather than targeting migrants as a convenient distraction.
