“Slovakia Shocks Finland 4-1 in Olympic Hockey Opener”

Slovakia’s Juraj Slafkovsky scored two goals against Finland in the men’s hockey opener at the Beijing Olympics four years ago. However, this time, Slafkovsky’s two goals led Slovakia to a surprising 4-1 victory over Finland in the first Olympics featuring NHL players in over a decade.

Expressing his joy, Slafkovsky stated, “This win feels much better.” The MVP of 2022, Slafkovsky, and goalie Samuel Hlavaj, who stopped 39 shots out of 40, showcased Slovakia’s strength, defeating a formidable opponent like Finland, despite having only seven NHL players compared to Finland’s almost entirely NHL-based roster.

Martin Fehervary, an alternate captain, acknowledged Slovakia’s underdog status, saying, “We are not usually expected to win many games. It’s been a while since we beat Finland, but today was the day, and we made it happen.”

Slafkovsky, now playing for the Montreal Canadiens, scored the tournament’s first goal early on, followed by another goal on a power play. His performance was praised by his teammate Erik Cernak, who commended Slafkovsky’s consistent play at the Olympics and in Montreal.

On the other hand, Finland’s goalie Juuse Saros faced criticism for allowing three goals on 24 shots. The team is now considering a goalie change for the upcoming game against Sweden, potentially replacing Saros with Kevin Lankinen.

In another match, Sweden managed to overcome a spirited Italian team, eventually winning 5-2. Despite an early scare when Italy took the lead, Sweden’s experience and skill prevailed, securing a hard-fought victory.

Sweden’s captain Gabriel Landeskog highlighted the competitive nature of the tournament, emphasizing that no game is easy in such high-stakes competitions. The Swedes had to work hard to secure the win against a resilient Italian side.

The game saw Italy’s goalie Damian Clara deliver an exceptional performance with 46 saves before leaving the game due to a leg cramp. Sweden’s William Nylander’s late goal proved decisive, sealing the victory for the heavily favored Swedish team.

In conclusion, both Slovakia and Sweden started their Olympic campaigns with impressive wins, setting the stage for intense competition in the men’s hockey tournament at the Milano-Cortina Olympics.
