The Cree Nation of Mistissini, situated approximately 600 kilometers northwest of Quebec City, has ended a lockdown following the fatal shooting of two individuals. The Quebec coroner’s office confirmed the victims as Bedabin Neeposh, aged 30, and Daniel Benac, aged 29, both residents of Mistissini.
Chief Michael Petawabano, the community leader, stated that the investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement determining that there is no longer a threat to public safety. He expressed gratitude to community members for their patience and cooperation during this challenging period.
Hugues Beaulieu, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), indicated that the homicides may be associated with organized crime. He reassured the public that there is no immediate danger, emphasizing that the incident appears to be isolated.
Earlier, Chief Petawabano had issued directives to close all schools, community buildings, offices, and facilities, as well as restrict travel in and out of the community. Residents were advised to secure their doors and comply with law enforcement instructions.
The SQ reported that the shooting occurred on Wednesday around 9 p.m. Local police responded to gunfire reports and found two men in their thirties with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. Despite efforts to save them, both individuals succumbed to their injuries. As of now, there are no suspects or arrests in connection with the incident.
Chief Petawabano, who declined interview requests, expressed condolences for the families affected by the tragedy. Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière and National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations, Cindy Woodhouse, also conveyed their support and condolences to the community.
Mistissini, located on the southern shore of Lake Mistassini, is home to approximately 4,000 residents.
