Kevin Koe’s curling team defied conventional preparation methods as they kicked off the Montana’s Brier on a winning streak. The Alberta-based team, comprising Koe, Tyler Tardi, Aaron Sluchinski, and Karrick Martin, clinched their fifth consecutive victory, securing the top spot in Pool B with an essential 7-6 triumph over Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone on Tuesday night.
Their recent wins against Dunstone, ranked as the second-best men’s team in Canada, and Mike McEwen from Saskatchewan, ranked fifth, positioned the Koe foursome favorably to lead their pool with three more games to go. Koe expressed satisfaction with their performance, highlighting the significance of head-to-head matchups in this format.
Hailing from The Glencoe Club in Calgary, Koe’s team had previously won the provincial championship in January. Notably, Tardi had briefly joined the Brad Jacobs team as an alternate for the recent Olympic Games in February.
Sluchinski, who plays as Koe’s vice and throws the second stones, had also been involved in curling activities at the Milan Cortina Games before reuniting with the team for the Canadian men’s curling championship in St. John’s, N.L. Despite a prolonged period without team practice due to various commitments, the team felt optimistic about their performance but acknowledged room for improvement.
In a tense ninth end, Koe’s strategic move forced Dunstone to concede a point, leading to a crucial victory. Meanwhile, other teams like Saskatchewan’s Mike McEwen and Braden Calvert were also making their mark in the competition. The top three teams from each pool would progress to the playoffs with the ultimate goal of representing Canada at the men’s world championship in Utah.
With an impressive track record as a four-time Brier winner and two-time world champion, Koe remains determined to excel in this year’s competition after facing disappointments in recent editions.
