Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone secured an 8-3 victory over Jamie Koe from the Northwest Territories on Monday, maintaining an undefeated streak at the Montana’s Brier in St. John’s. With this win, Dunstone joined Alberta’s Kevin Koe at the top of the Pool B standings, both boasting a 3-0 record. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s Mike McEwen triumphed over Northern Ontario’s Sandy MacEwan with a score of 5-1, while Manitoba’s Braden Calvert outplayed British Columbia’s Cody Tanaka with an 8-4 win. Additionally, New Brunswick’s James Grattan emerged victorious against Yukon’s Thomas Scoffin with a score of 9-6.
McEwen held the third position with a 3-1 record, followed by Calvert at 2-1. The top three teams from each nine-team pool will advance to the playoffs.
During the morning session, Brad Jacobs of Canada, who recently clinched gold at the Milan Cortina Olympics, dominated over Ontario’s Jayden King with an 8-2 win. King, with a 3-2 record, later bounced back in the evening draw by defeating winless Derek Samagalski (0-5) of Nunavut with a score of 8-3 in nine ends.
Brad Gushue, a six-time Brier champion, matched Jacobs’ performance with a 4-0 record in Pool A after defeating Nathan Young of Newfoundland and Labrador 8-5 in the evening session. Young’s record slipped to 2-3.
In other matches, Tyler Smith of Prince Edward Island secured an 8-6 win over Kelly Knapp of Saskatchewan, while Jean-Michel Menard of Quebec stole two in the 10th end to beat Kendal Thompson of Nova Scotia 8-5. Menard’s victory improved his record to 3-1, placing him in third behind Jacobs and Gushue. Thompson’s record dropped to 1-3.
Additional morning results included Nova Scotia’s Thompson defeating Young 11-2, P.E.I.’s Smith prevailing over Nunavut’s Samagalski 10-5, and Menard securing an 8-7 victory against Saskatchewan’s Knapp with two points in the 10th end.
