Iran’s Crackdown and Currency Crisis Heighten US-Iran Tensions

Iran’s recent crackdown on nationwide protests has resulted in the deaths of over 6,100 individuals, with concerns that the actual number could be higher, according to activists on Tuesday. Simultaneously, Iran’s currency, the rial, plummeted to an all-time low of 1.5 million against the US dollar. The deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying guided missile destroyers in the Middle East strengthens the US’s capacity to potentially strike Iran, especially as Gulf Arab nations have indicated a desire to avoid involvement in any military actions despite hosting US troops.

Amid escalating tensions, two Iranian-supported militias in the region have hinted at launching new offensives in support of Iran after US President Donald Trump’s warnings of military intervention in response to the violent suppression of protesters and potential mass executions by Tehran following the demonstrations. Iran has made threats of dragging the entire Middle East into a conflict, but its military capabilities have been weakened since the Israeli-initiated conflict in June. The country’s economy is under immense pressure, risking further unrest as basic goods become increasingly unaffordable for its populace, particularly if Trump opts for military strikes.

A private security firm, Ambrey, released a statement on Tuesday suggesting that the US has positioned sufficient military assets to engage in kinetic operations against Iran while safeguarding itself and its allies from potential retaliatory actions. The firm emphasized that supporting or retaliating for Iranian protesters through punitive strikes might not be a strong enough reason for prolonged military conflict, but targeting Iranian military capabilities could heighten the chances of limited US intervention.

The latest figures on casualties, reported by the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, indicated a death toll of 6,159, including protesters, government forces, children, and civilians. The crackdown has also led to over 42,200 arrests. The accuracy of these numbers has been corroborated by a network of activists within Iran. Due to internet disruptions and communication limitations imposed by authorities, independent verification of the death toll has been challenging.

The Iranian government has contested these figures, claiming a significantly lower death toll of 3,117, categorizing the deceased as civilians, security personnel, and “terrorists.” Historically, Iran has downplayed or omitted casualties during periods of unrest. The recent protests, triggered by economic woes and widespread discontent, have been met with severe repression by Iranian authorities, including a prolonged internet blackout, the most extensive in the country’s history.

Iran’s influence in the Middle East through its proxy militant groups, known as the “Axis of Resistance,” has been significantly weakened following targeted attacks by Israel on groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The conflict in Syria, where Iran supported Bashar al-Assad, culminated in his overthrow by rebels in 2024 after a protracted and violent struggle. In response to escalating tensions, Yemen’s Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have threatened to resume attacks on Red Sea shipping, while Iraqi militia leader Ahmad al-Hamidawi cautioned against any aggression towards Iran.

As the situation remains volatile, Hezbollah, a key Iranian ally, has refrained from disclosing its plans in the event of a potential conflict. The group’s leader, Sheikh Naim Kassem, affirmed preparations to defend against any aggression but noted that specific actions would be determined based on prevailing circumstances.
