Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner Narges Mohammadi in Critical Health Crisis

Imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner, Narges Mohammadi, recently transferred from jail to the hospital, is in critical need of specialized medical attention for a severe heart condition, as stated by her brother to Reuters on Monday. Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while incarcerated for her activism supporting women’s rights and opposing the death penalty in Iran, experienced a suspected heart attack in late March. Her health rapidly deteriorated, leading her family to seek medical care at a hospital in northwestern Iran on May 1.

Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, expressed concern about her condition, citing severe headaches, nausea, and chest pains as primary worries, particularly related to her heart. The current hospital where she is receiving treatment lacks the necessary resources to provide adequate care. Medical experts have advised that her life is at risk and that she urgently requires at least a month away from prison conditions to receive proper treatment from her trusted doctors, who are familiar with her medical history.

Both Mohammadi’s family and the Norwegian Nobel Committee have urged Iranian authorities to facilitate her transfer to her medical team in Tehran for specialized care. Hamidreza Mohammadi praised his sister’s resilience, emphasizing her refusal to be broken by the oppression she faces. Despite the challenges, he highlighted her unwavering energy and determination in the face of adversity.

Amidst the ongoing tensions with the U.S. and Israel, Hamidreza Mohammadi expressed the difficulty of communication and the oppressive atmosphere in Iran, where many lives are at risk. He emphasized the urgency for the international community to shift its focus towards the Iranian people’s struggles and the dire human rights situation in the country, calling for global attention and action.
