“Former Yukon Liberal Leader Mike Pemberton Resigns”

Former Yukon Liberal Party leader, Mike Pemberton, has officially resigned from his position. Vuntut Gwitchin MLA Debra-Leigh Reti has been appointed as the interim party leader by the party executive. This decision was communicated through an official statement sent out by the party, confirming Pemberton’s immediate departure.

In a statement to CBC News, Pemberton revealed that his resignation was a mutual decision made in consultation with the party executive. He emphasized the importance of having an interim leader with a seat in the Legislative Assembly, leading to the selection of Reti for the role.

Reti currently serves as the sole Liberal MLA in the Legislative Assembly. Following the Yukon Party’s victory over the Liberals in November’s election, Pemberton had initially intended to remain as party leader during the transition period until the upcoming annual general meeting in January.

Reflecting on his tenure as leader, Pemberton expressed some regrets about not taking more decisive actions, especially regarding addressing the cost of living. He acknowledged that his leadership victory over Doris Bill had caused divisions within the party and expressed hope that the next leader would focus on unity.

Pemberton affirmed his continued support for Reti and disclosed his plans to attend the party’s annual general meeting. He clarified that he does not intend to seek re-election for the party leadership in the future.

The forthcoming meeting marks the first official public gathering of the Yukon Liberals since losing power. Although the initial agenda included a leadership review, the updated statement from the party omitted any mention of such a review.

Premier Currie Dixon commented on Reti’s appointment, describing it as a logical choice and extending gratitude to Pemberton for his service and dedication to a smooth post-election transition. Dixon also conveyed his best wishes to Debra-Leigh Reti in her new role.
