The federal privacy watchdog has found that Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot violated Canada’s privacy legislation by producing sexual deepfakes. The commissioner stated that Grok’s AI image generator lacked sufficient safeguards upon its launch and failed to adequately consider privacy implications. An investigation initiated in January focused on the widespread distribution of sexualized deepfakes generated by Grok and circulated on the X social media platform. The privacy commissioner revealed that Grok was utilized to create millions of sexualized deepfake content. The examination assessed the companies’ adherence to privacy regulations and whether they obtained proper consent for collecting, utilizing, and sharing personal data for deepfake creation, including explicit materials. The proliferation of these images triggered international scrutiny, prompting the U.K., the European Union, and California to launch their own investigations.
