The Liberal Party revealed on Saturday that Dr. Danielle Martin, a family physician and chair of the department of family and community medicine at the University of Toronto, will be their candidate in the upcoming federal byelection in University-Rosedale. This riding was previously held by Chrystia Freeland, who recently vacated her position.
In 2014, Dr. Martin gained attention for defending Canada’s health care system before a U.S. Senate committee. Described as a strong advocate for constituents, she aims to collaborate with Mark Carney and the Liberal team to bolster the economy, safeguard essential programs, and provide Canadians with more affordable living and advancement opportunities.
Chrystia Freeland, the former MP for University-Rosedale, resigned to assume a voluntary advisory role for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Known for her opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Freeland served as deputy prime minister and Canada’s first female finance minister from 2019 to 2024.
The byelection date for University-Rosedale is yet to be set by Prime Minister Mark Carney. According to Elections Canada, the announcement must fall between January 20 and July 8, 2026, with the earliest possible voting date being March 2, 2026.
