The Inuit government in northern Labrador has expressed solidarity with Greenland amidst U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to assert control over the Danish territory. Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe emphasized the right of Greenland’s predominantly Inuit population to shape their own destiny. Lampe condemned any efforts to impose external governance over Greenland, viewing it as an affront to Inuit autonomy and liberty. He highlighted the deep cultural and historical connections between Inuit communities in Nunatsiavut and Greenland.
President Trump’s repeated assertions of seizing Greenland from Denmark have raised concerns among Greenlanders and European allies. The Nunatsiavut region comprises five communities along Labrador’s northeast coast and holds the distinction of being the first Inuit region in Canada to achieve self-government.
