Dedicated Sea Turtle Conservationist Killed in Israeli Strike

In a recent tragic event, Mona Khalil, a dedicated conservationist known for her work with endangered sea turtles, lost her life in an Israeli strike in Lebanon. Despite past conflicts that forced her to temporarily flee her home in Al-Mansouri, Khalil chose to remain in her beloved beachfront property during the latest war. Sadly, she succumbed to injuries sustained in the strike, leaving behind a legacy of conservation work that touched many lives.

Mona Khalil, a Nigerian-born citizen of Lebanon and the Netherlands, spent over twenty years protecting sea turtles along the coastline of Al-Mansouri. Alongside her partner, Habiba Fayed, she transformed her inherited property into a sanctuary for loggerhead and green sea turtles. The Orange House, her residence turned ecotourism bed-and-breakfast, served as a hub for volunteers monitoring nesting activities and ensuring the safety of turtle nests from human interference and light pollution.

Despite the challenges of war and conflict in the region, Khalil’s dedication to sea turtle conservation remained unwavering. Her commitment to protecting these marine creatures not only inspired fellow conservationists but also led to the establishment of the Hima Qoleileh–Mansouri conservation area, safeguarding a significant stretch of Lebanon’s coastline.

Assad Serhal, a close friend and fellow conservationist, reflected on Khalil’s remarkable impact, describing her as a unique individual whose legacy will endure for generations. Khalil’s passion for sea turtles, sparked by a personal tragedy, resonated with those who knew her, and her work created a lasting sanctuary for these endangered creatures.

The news of Khalil’s passing has deeply affected the conservation community, with many expressing their grief and gratitude for her contributions. Her Orange House Project not only served as a research and conservation center but also fostered a sense of family among volunteers who worked alongside her. Khalil’s nurturing spirit and dedication to environmental protection left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As the conservation community mourns the loss of Mona Khalil, her legacy stands as a testament to the power of individual action in protecting our natural world. Through her tireless efforts, Khalil ensured that the sea turtles she cherished will always have a safe haven to return to, preserving their existence for future generations.
