Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming clinched the gold medal in the men’s snowboard slopestyle competition at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics on Wednesday. Celebrating his 22nd birthday, Su secured his fourth career medal, the second at these Games. The silver medal was claimed by Taiga Hasegawa from Japan, while American Jake Canter took home the bronze.
Su’s initial run scored 82.41 points, which proved unbeatable as none of his competitors surpassed it. The former child actor had previously won gold in big air and silver in slopestyle at the Beijing 2022 Games. Just last week, he secured a bronze in big air at the Italian Alps event.
Mark McMorris from Canada finished in eighth place with a top score of 75.50 points. Despite missing out on the big air event due to an injury sustained during training, McMorris expressed gratitude for his 16-year career and stated his intention to continue competing.
In the women’s competition, Japanese athlete Mari Fukada claimed the gold medal with a top score of 87.83, followed by New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott with a silver and Kokomo Murase from Japan with the bronze. Laurie Blouin was the highest-ranking Canadian, finishing in fifth place with a score of 68.60 points.
The snowboard slopestyle course in Livigno featured three rail elements and three jumps, with riders judged on their trick execution and overall performance. Each competitor had three attempts, with only their best score counting towards their final ranking.
