“Alcatraz Coyote’s Epic 3km Ocean Swim Stuns Experts”

A wild dog recently swam an impressive 3 kilometers across challenging ocean currents. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed her astonishment at the journey of the so-called “Alcatraz Coyote,” describing it as a unique event in her experience with wild canines. The male coyote was initially believed to have swum from San Francisco to Alcatraz Island, but biologists later discovered it had actually embarked from Angel Island, a state park approximately twice the distance away.

The bedraggled coyote, struggling to climb onto Alcatraz’s rocky shore, was captured in photos and videos on January 24th. While scientists confirmed its successful arrival on the island, the exact reason for its journey remains a mystery. Fox speculated that the coyote may have been seeking a mate or new territory, driven by biological instincts.

Coyotes are renowned for their adaptability and resilience, but Fox expressed concern over the coyote’s appearance post-swim. Despite this, she highlighted the awe-inspiring nature of studying wild animals and their unpredictable behaviors. The island, now a conservation area for diverse wildlife, offers sanctuary to various species, including seabirds and marine life.

Wildlife ecology professor Joel Berger suggested that the coyote may have sought refuge on Alcatraz due to territorial conflicts in its previous habitat. He emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence with coyotes, highlighting their importance in maintaining ecological balance. Researchers are conducting DNA analysis on coyotes in the area to gain further insights into their behavior and population dynamics.

The Alcatraz-bound coyote is part of a group of 14 that established a presence on Angel Island since 2017. Fox expressed anticipation for the coyote’s future movements, eager to see whether it returns to Angel Island or ventures into new territories.
