Connor Hellebuyck is facing criticism for attending a White House event hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump after winning the gold medal in the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Games. Despite being able to handle the backlash himself, Hellebuyck expressed disappointment that his wife has been targeted for simply being by his side.
Following their victory over Canada in the gold-medal final, Hellebuyck and his teammates received a call from Trump in their locker room. In the call, captured on video, Trump made derogatory remarks about the U.S. women’s team while inviting the men’s team to a reception. Most of the American players attended the reception where Trump announced that Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Those who visited the White House, including Hellebuyck, faced significant criticism on social media.
Hellebuyck addressed the criticism for the first time, defending his wife and family against unwarranted attacks. Jets coach Scott Arniel also expressed his support, condemning the personal nature of the backlash faced by Hellebuyck’s loved ones.
Despite the controversy, Hellebuyck stands by his decision to attend the event, emphasizing that he has no regrets. He expressed gratitude for the positive reception from the fans upon his return and highlighted his commitment to the Winnipeg community.
In other news, defenceman Josh Morrissey is set to return to the Winnipeg Jets’ lineup after recovering from an injury sustained during the Olympics. Morrissey, who expressed disappointment over missing out on the Olympic opportunity, commended Team Canada for their efforts and representation during the tournament. He reflected on the challenging experience but remained proud of his team’s performance throughout the event.
