Flight attendants working on Air Canada Express flights are currently in the process of voting on whether to authorize a strike action, as their union reports a deadlock in bargaining discussions. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, is seeking a strike mandate after nine months of negotiations with Jazz Aviation failed to resolve key issues, despite the involvement of a mediator.
According to a union statement, obtaining a strong strike mandate is deemed essential to convey the seriousness of the unresolved matters and the determination of its members. In response, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation expressed the company’s commitment to reaching an agreement at the negotiation table without causing disruptions to its operations. The company is now pursuing the appointment of a conciliation officer as talks with the Canadian Flight Attendant Union have hit a standstill.
Jazz Aviation, the primary operator for Air Canada Express flights, is owned by a holding company called Chorus, not Air Canada. Among the critical issues cited by the union is the disparity in pay compared to other Canadian airlines and the need for improved compensation that acknowledges the impact the job has on the flight attendants’ lives. The union is also advocating for its members to be recognized as safety professionals for the various safety-related tasks they perform.
In light of recent industry-wide agreements, the union argues that Jazz flight attendants have fallen behind in terms of compensation. The importance of safety in the profession was underscored by a fatal accident involving Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 at LaGuardia Airport, where both pilots tragically lost their lives in March.
Marsha Walters, president of the Canadian Flight Attendant Union, emphasized the need for fair working conditions, adequate rest, and respect for the flight attendants responsible for passenger safety. The voting process to decide on the strike mandate will conclude on Friday at noon. This development follows recent strikes by WestJet flight attendants and over 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants in the past year. The potential timing of a strike by Air Canada Express flight attendants remains uncertain pending the outcome of the vote.
