A Toronto police constable, identified as the starting point of a lengthy corruption investigation, has been refused bail. Const. Timothy Barnhardt, aged 56, faced the denial of bail in a Toronto court on Friday afternoon, although his defense requested protective custody, which was granted. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 19.
Barnhardt is one of seven police officers, along with a retired officer, who were arrested this week as part of an extensive corruption probe conducted by York Regional Police, resulting in multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and drug trafficking. Additionally, nineteen civilians were taken into custody. Peel Regional Police announced the suspension of three officers on Friday, although no charges have been filed against them at present.
Barnhardt is confronted with a significant number of charges. York police Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan referred to Barnhardt as the “genesis” of the investigation, alleging that he leaked confidential information to criminals, aiding in targeted shootings.
The constable is also accused of aiding illicit cannabis dispensaries by accepting bribes to shield them from police scrutiny, as well as being involved in cocaine trafficking. Hailing from Mississauga, Barnhardt is facing 17 charges, including conspiracy to obstruct justice, conspiracy to commit public mischief, and several drug trafficking offenses.
