Katelyn Fung and Kate Miller secured their first international podium finish together in the synchronized 10-meter event at the Montreal Diving World Cup over the weekend. The duo from Ontario excelled in their final two dives, earning 69.12 and 73.92 points, contributing to their total score of 296.94 points, surpassing the Australian team’s provisional second-place score of 293.22.
The gold medal was claimed by Lu Wei and Zhang Minjie of China with a score of 349.98 points, while Jo Jin Mi and Kim Mi Hwa of North Korea took home the silver medal with 304.92 points. Fung, who is based in London but trains in Montreal, expressed her joy at the achievement, emphasizing the hard work put in during training sessions. Miller, a student at the University of Southern California, intends to increase her training in Montreal alongside Fung in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Reflecting on their success, Miller from Ottawa highlighted the significance of winning a medal in their second year as a team, building confidence for future competitions. The pair aimed to carry the momentum from their bronze medal win into the women’s 10-meter individual final the following day.
In another event on Saturday, Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Carson Paul competed in the men’s synchronized three-meter event for the first time, narrowly missing the podium by 4.11 points, finishing fourth. The Chinese duo Wang Zongyuan and Zheng Jiuyuan secured the gold medal with 461.37 points, followed by Juan Celaya Hernandez and Osmar Olvera Ibara of Mexico with 441.63 points claiming the silver.
Despite falling short, Zsombor-Murray and Paul showcased a strong performance, setting their sights on future competitions. The event witnessed a display of top-tier diving skills and competitive spirits among the global athletes.
