London, Ont. authorities confirmed that four individuals are in custody after being accused of storing chemicals and producing firearms in a residence. The investigation, as shared by the London Police Service in a press conference, does not indicate any involvement in terrorism or pose a national security threat.
Deputy Chief Paul Bastien emphasized the cautious approach taken in the investigation, stating that while national security elements were considered, they do not believe it to be relevant in this case. The ongoing investigation will continue with local police presence at the site.
The accused – Jerry Tong, Zekun Wang, Fei (Frank) Han, and Feiyang (Astrid) Ji – are facing numerous charges, including possession of explosives and firearm manufacturing, following a search at 212 Chesham Place. The investigation was initiated after a trespassing incident at Western University led to the arrests of the individuals involved.
All four accused are either current or former students of Western University, according to police records. Investigations revealed that Wang, Han, and Ji reside at the Chesham Place address. Tong, previously linked to Ottawa and Gatineau, is strongly associated with the Chesham Place location.
Acting Detective Superintendent Sean Travis disclosed that firearms and chemicals were discovered during the search warrants executed at the residences. A video featuring Tong, Wang, and Han discussing the development of anti-drone defense systems was also noted, although its relation to the charges remains under investigation.
London police clarified that the firearm manufacturing charges were unrelated to the device depicted in the video. Following a controlled disposal of explosives, the accused are detained pending upcoming bail hearings in London court. The breakdown of charges against each individual includes various firearm-related offenses and possession of explosives.
