“Study: Flight Attendants & Pilots Face Higher Radiation Cancer Risk”

A recent study reveals that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancers compared to those working with radioactive materials. Cosmic radiation, originating from space, poses a significant exposure risk for individuals flying at high altitudes, leading to concerns about increased cancer death rates among frequent flyers, especially aircrew members.

Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study analyzed over 12 million death certificates to examine cancer death rates associated with radiation exposure. Flight attendants showed the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-related cancers among more than 500 occupations, followed by pilots. Both groups exhibited elevated odds of dying from various radiation-related cancers, while maintaining normal rates for cancers unrelated to radiation exposure.

The study challenges the belief that flight crews’ heightened skin cancer risk stems from sunny layovers, suggesting that cockpit environments may play a more crucial role. Flight attendants had a 50% higher likelihood of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had a 36% higher odds. Despite study limitations in quantifying individual exposure levels, the combined impact of cosmic radiation, UV-A light, and circadian disruption poses methodological challenges.

Jet lag, time zone changes, and irregular work schedules may exacerbate cancer risks for aircrews due to disruptions in the body’s internal clock. While the Federal Aviation Administration recognizes radiation exposure risks for aircrews, there is no federal regulation on dose limits or monitoring. The report underscores the need for increased awareness and management of radiation exposure risks among flight crews, emphasizing the importance of regular skin screenings and early cancer detection for individuals working in high-altitude environments.
