The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly has decided to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Winter Paralympics under their respective flags and national anthems, according to IPC President Andrew Parsons. This decision, which allocated 10 slots to athletes from Russia and Belarus, has stirred controversy given the ongoing tensions surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Parsons emphasized that the decision is final and cannot be reversed by the board or himself. Following the announcement, Ukraine declared that their team would boycott the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina Paralympics on March 6 in Verona. In a show of solidarity, the Czech Paralympic Committee also announced a similar boycott, with some Polish officials joining in staying away.
Despite the boycotts, Parsons encouraged Ukrainian athletes to attend the ceremony, highlighting the values of inclusion and diversity. He expressed concern over potential politicization of the situation and mentioned that the IPC had not received any official communication about further withdrawals from other countries.
Russia, facing exclusion from international sports events due to the Ukraine conflict, criticized the mixing of politics and sports, deeming the targeting of disabled athletes as offensive. The country has been allocated spots in Para Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding, while Belarus secured four spots in cross-country skiing.
The Italian government disagreed with the IPC’s decision and urged a reversal. Parsons mentioned ongoing discussions with the host nation to mitigate differences and ensure the best possible environment for the athletes. The Winter Paralympics are scheduled to take place from March 6 to March 15.
