Canada’s team captain, Alphonso Davies, suffered a hamstring injury during Bayern Munich’s victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The swift left-back exited the field in the second half, visibly distressed, prompting concerns about the seriousness of the injury just ahead of the World Cup, which Canada is set to co-host in approximately four months.
Bayern Munich confirmed that Davies sustained a muscle tear in his right hamstring and will undergo a period of recovery. Despite leaving the field unaided, there was initial optimism from Bayern coach Vincent Kompany regarding the injury’s severity.
Davies, who recently returned to play after overcoming an ACL injury, has had limited Bundesliga appearances this season due to a previous serious knee injury that sidelined him for around nine months. The knee injury, including ligament damage, was suffered while representing Canada in March.
The injury comes as Canada prepares to co-host the World Cup with the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The extent of Davies’ absence from the pitch remains uncertain, with hope that his recovery period will be relatively short to allow his return to competitive play.
