Athletes gathered at the Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Village enjoyed a snowy day conversing at an outdoor coffee stand, exchanging national team pins, and embracing the scenic Dolomites ambiance.
The village, accommodating approximately 1,400 athletes, coaches, and team members for Milano Cortina 2026, consists of 377 trailers located in the Alpine valley, a brief drive from downtown Cortina. Another significant Olympic Village is situated in Milan.
American curler Cory Thiesse expressed delight in the vibrant atmosphere among fellow athletes, emphasizing the shared living, training, and dining experiences against the backdrop of the majestic mountains.
Cortina hosts various sports like curling, women’s Alpine skiing, bobsled, luge, and skeleton. Athletes have personalized their mobile homes with team flags and banners to exhibit team spirit and reminders of home. Notably, Team Canada marked its territory with a red moose statue placed in front of their lodgings.
Each trailer is split into two rooms, accommodating up to two individuals per room. The facilities are basic yet comfortable, featuring beds, a shower, and a toilet. Additionally, half of the trailers are wheelchair-accessible for the upcoming Paralympics in March.
Australian skeleton competitor Nick Timmings shared his trailer with his coach, who is also his twin brother, emphasizing the satisfactory amenities and warmth provided in the trailers.
The Village offers amenities such as a fitness center, recreational spaces, lounge, dining hall, massage rooms, and a prayer room. Athletes, like Ukrainian luger Nazarii Kachmar, enjoy interacting with fellow athletes from different countries in the common areas, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
The outdoor coffee stand serves as a popular meeting spot, where athletes engage in conversations while savoring cappuccinos and espressos. Athletes also engage in pin trading, as observed when bobsledder De Aundre John from Trinidad and Tobago exchanged national pins with American bobsledders.
The diverse culinary experiences at the village were also highlighted, with athletes praising Italian dishes like lasagna and desserts such as cannoli in the dining hall. The scenic beauty of the mountains surrounding the village adds to the Winter Olympics ambiance, creating a picturesque setting for the athletes.
