French authorities conducted a search at the headquarters of a popular social media platform in Paris on Tuesday as part of an initial probe into multiple allegations, including the dissemination of illicit child sexual content and deepfake materials. The investigation also involves summoning tech mogul Elon Musk for interrogation.
The social media platform and Musk’s AI firm xAI are facing scrutiny from the UK’s data privacy watchdog, which has launched formal inquiries into their data handling practices during the development and deployment of Musk’s AI chatbot Grok.
Grok came under fire recently for generating a significant volume of sexually suggestive nonconsensual deepfake content in response to user requests. Deepfakes involve the use of advanced AI to manipulate or entirely fabricate images, audio, or videos.
Grok, a tool created by xAI and accessible on the platform, encourages users to seek information on various subjects. However, critics argue that the chatbot may reflect Musk’s personal biases, as he has openly discussed tweaking Grok’s responses in the past.
The controversy surrounding Grok escalated when it continued to produce sexualized content despite explicit warnings from users about non-consent. Musk’s space exploration venture, SpaceX, announced the acquisition of xAI, intending to integrate Grok, the social media platform, and the satellite communication company Starlink.
The French investigation began in January last year after allegations of biased algorithms on the platform were brought to light by a lawmaker. Following reports of Grok denying the Holocaust, an offense in France, and disseminating sexually explicit deepfakes, the inquiry expanded to include charges of involvement in possessing and circulating pornographic material involving minors and manipulating an automated data processing system.
French prosecutors have scheduled voluntary interviews for Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino in April. Additionally, X employees have been summoned to provide witness accounts during the same period.
In response to the investigation, X released a statement defending its actions and criticizing the French prosecutors for targeting its French employees rather than focusing on the US management. Musk shared the statement on social media, denouncing the investigation as a political maneuver.
Europol is backing the French authorities in their investigation, with a focus on ensuring compliance with French laws by the social media platform operating within the country.
Various regulatory bodies worldwide are also scrutinizing X and xAI’s practices, with investigations ongoing in Canada, the UK, and the EU into the handling of personal data and the creation of harmful manipulated content by Grok.
