Russian drones conducted an attack in a village in the Kyiv region, resulting in the tragic deaths of a three-year-old boy and his grandparents, as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Additionally, another individual lost their life during a ballistic strike on the capital. The intensified attacks by Russia on Kyiv have been met with retaliatory actions by Ukraine targeting Russian oil facilities and logistics infrastructure. Both countries, however, deny intentionally targeting civilians in their military actions.
Overnight, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched six ballistic missiles and 151 drones towards Ukraine. Ukrainian forces responded by hitting Russia’s Ilsky and Syzran oil refineries, causing fires at both locations. In a separate incident, five individuals were wounded in Russia’s Krasnodar region following a drone attack by Ukraine.
Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, currently in Serbia for an official visit, emphasized the need for increased support from Europe and America to halt the ongoing conflict with Russia. He highlighted the critical shortage of air defense missiles for U.S. Patriot systems in Ukraine. Despite downing 135 drones, Ukrainian air defenses struggled to intercept ballistic missiles, with only 29 out of 195 missiles intercepted in July.
The attacks near Kyiv resulted in significant damage to residential and commercial properties in the Brovarskyi district, with fires reported in multiple locations. Tragically, in the village of Puhivka, a child and his grandparents were killed by Russian drones, leading to injuries sustained by the child’s family members and their neighbor. Fires and damage to commercial premises were also reported in Kyiv, with residents hearing powerful explosions in the city center.
In a separate incident, a drone breached Bulgarian airspace from Romania and exploded near the village of Kardam without causing casualties or infrastructure damage. The Bulgarian defense ministry indicated that the drone was likely a Maya decoy drone commonly used by the Ukrainian military. This incident underscores the growing concerns over drone incursions linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the need for enhanced defense mechanisms within NATO alliance member states.
The detection and identification of drones continue to pose challenges, as highlighted by Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. He acknowledged delays in the delivery of high-precision radars to the Bulgarian army and pledged to address the issue promptly.
