Russia conducted a heavy bombardment of ballistic missiles and drones overnight, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and injuring 30 civilians in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. This attack followed a previous assault by Russia that caused casualties and damage across Ukraine, taking advantage of Kyiv’s lack of Western-supplied anti-ballistic missile defenses.
The ongoing series of attacks is hindering efforts to find a diplomatic resolution to Russia’s prolonged invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s Defence Ministry announced a significant strike targeting Ukrainian military-industrial complexes and logistics centers in Kyiv.
In the Solomianskyi district of Kyiv, a five-story residential building sustained damage from falling debris, causing a fire. The emergency services evacuated 35 individuals from the upper floors, resulting in two fatalities and eight injuries, including two children. In the Darnytskyi district, seven people lost their lives, and 14 others were injured due to fires and damage to buildings and vehicles.
Additional incidents included firefighters extinguishing a fire in a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Reports also emerged of damage to commercial and residential structures in two other areas of the city.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been advocating for increased Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems from the United States and other Western allies to counter Russian missile attacks. He emphasized the critical need for missile interceptors to protect Ukrainian lives in the face of ongoing Russian airstrikes.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to a diversion of interceptor missile supplies originally intended for Ukraine to the U.S. and its Gulf allies. While there were initial pledges to provide Ukraine with Patriot systems, recent statements from President Donald Trump have indicated a potential shift in this commitment.
Witnesses described the harrowing experiences of residents during the attacks, highlighting the psychological toll of the escalating violence. Lithuania’s embassy in Kyiv was among the locations damaged by missile strikes, while a separate drone attack in Russian-occupied Crimea resulted in casualties.
Despite the prolonged conflict, Ukrainian forces have managed to slow down Russian advances significantly this year. Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian oil facilities, logistics sites, and weapons production facilities, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s war efforts.
In a notable development, Ukrainian drones successfully struck and sank a civilian vessel owned by the Russian state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, in the Black Sea. The incident reflects the intensifying maritime confrontations between Russia and Ukraine as they target ships aiding the opposing side’s military operations.
