Gifted dogs with exceptional word-learning abilities have caught the attention of researchers. While most dogs typically learn words through interaction with their owners, a select few exhibit remarkable linguistic talents. These “gifted word learners” can comprehend a vast vocabulary, with some learning over 100 words.
In a study published in Science, researchers discovered that some dogs could discern an extensive number of toy names, limited only by their owners’ patience and available toy space. Shany Dror, a post-doctoral researcher at E.L.T.E. University in Budapest and the Veterinary University of Vienna, highlighted that around 40 to 45 dogs globally demonstrated the capacity to grasp more than 100 words, with some even understanding up to 1,000 toy names.
Interestingly, this exceptional skill is not limited to specific breeds, though Border Collies predominated among the gifted dogs. Notably, breeds not traditionally bred for human work, such as Pekingese and Shih Tzu, also showcased this ability. Miso, a Border Collie from Oshawa, Ont., exemplifies one of these extraordinary dogs, demonstrating an impressive grasp of over 200 words.
In a recent study by Dror involving 14 gifted dogs, researchers conducted language tests to assess word recall abilities. The dogs astounded researchers by accurately identifying toys they overheard being mentioned only a few times. Dror emphasized that while dogs exhibit word-learning abilities comparable to toddlers aged 18 to 24 months, there exists a crucial distinction; dogs are learning words, not language.
Andrea Breen, an associate professor at the University of Guelph, cautioned against equating dog behavior with human language development. While dogs may demonstrate behaviors resembling those of children, their underlying thoughts and learning mechanisms likely differ. Breen emphasized that meaningful interactions, such as engaging with toys, significantly enhance a dog’s learning potential.
