The Canadian government has revealed that approximately $2 billion in funds remains unclaimed as millions of paper cheques sent out by federal departments have not been cashed by recipients. Over the past four years, Ottawa issued 3.9 million paper cheques that were left uncashed, with $141 million designated for the Canada Carbon Rebate program. Although the rebate initiative was terminated last year, the cheques issued by the government do not have an expiration date.
Additionally, families failed to cash around $42.8 million in cheques intended for the Canada Child Benefit, a tax-free monthly payment aimed at supporting child-rearing expenses. While the government encourages direct deposit for payments, certain benefits are still distributed via traditional mail methods.
