“Vancouver Area Abuzz with Spectacular Pyrocumulus Clouds”

Photos of expansive cauliflower-shaped clouds are surfacing on social media in the Vancouver area, identified as pyrocumulus clouds resulting from a wildfire over 200 kilometers away. The B.C. Wildfire Service reported that the Anderson Creek fire was detected by responding aircraft on Tuesday and rapidly intensified due to strong winds.

Meteorologist Matt Loney from Environment Canada explained that each fire emits substantial heat, with the Anderson Creek fire notably intensifying. Shared images on various social platforms displayed towering cumulus clouds above dark smoke columns, visible even from locations like Coquitlam, approximately 220 kilometers distant.

Loney elaborated that any source of intense heat generating convective currents would lead to these clouds, formed as hot air ascends quickly and condenses moisture. He analogized the process to opening a freezer on a scorching day, causing fog to descend due to temperature differentials.

The clouds contain diverse particulates like burning debris, dust, and ashes, visible to the naked eye until reaching a thermal equilibrium, spreading horizontally. This natural event near Boston Bar demonstrates both extreme heat intensity and atmospheric instability, as the vertical growth of the cloud enabled widespread visibility.

Rachel White, an atmospheric sciences assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, expressed awe and concern over the Fraser Canyon cloud photos, emphasizing their impressive yet alarming nature. White mentioned her scientific curiosity about observing such clouds and highlighted the menacing power of wildfires.

Moreover, she noted the potential for pyrocumulus clouds to trigger thunderstorms with lightning, posing additional wildfire risks. The occurrence of lightning within these cloud systems depends on specific environmental conditions, potentially leading to further fire outbreaks.
