The Canadian government has allocated $228.8 million to aid workers in Ontario industries affected by U.S. tariffs in upskilling and adjusting to the trade war challenges. This initiative, known as the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response, focuses on supporting employees and job seekers in the softwood lumber, steel, and automotive sectors, which continue to face significant tariffs from the United States. Additionally, workers in industries indirectly impacted by tariffs can benefit from the training and employment services offered.
Approximately 27,000 workers in Ontario are expected to receive training and support under this program, as estimated by the Ottawa government. Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu and Ontario Minister David Piccini jointly announced this funding on Parliament Hill. In a related development, Minister Hajdu disclosed a separate $94.5 million investment over five years to enhance data sharing on job opportunities within key sectors.
This strategic funding aims to equip Ontario workers with the necessary skills to navigate the challenges posed by ongoing trade disputes, fostering resilience and adaptability in the face of economic uncertainties.
