Minneapolis Girl Fears ICE, Chooses Virtual School

In Minneapolis, a nine-year-old girl is attending virtual classes from a friend’s home, avoiding in-person school due to concerns about encountering U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Originating from Haiti, her family fears ICE detainment, leading to their decision to stay indoors.

The girl’s mother shares that her daughter often questions why she cannot attend school, causing emotional distress. The family, like many others in Minnesota, faces the uncertainty of potential ICE encounters, hindering their daily activities including work, school, and grocery shopping.

The recent detainment of five-year-old Liam Ramos, reportedly used as bait to apprehend his father, has heightened fears among families. This situation has resulted in fewer children, especially those of color, participating in school and extracurricular activities, altering the atmosphere in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Educator Mandi Jung notes a significant decline in the number of students attending classes, with immigrant families opting for online learning due to safety concerns. The St. Paul Public Schools superintendent reports that around 25% of students, approximately 7,000 individuals, have transitioned to virtual learning amid the current circumstances.

Beyond educational settings, community members like Wes Burdine are monitoring ICE activities to provide support to affected families. Emotional turmoil stemming from detainments is palpable, with students expressing anxieties about their status and safety. The community has rallied together to assist families in need, showcasing acts of compassion during challenging times.
