“Astronaut Jeremy Hansen Announces Retirement from Canadian Space Agency”

Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who recently completed a journey around the moon in April, has decided to retire from his position within the astronaut corps at the Canadian Space Agency. This decision was officially communicated by the agency through a press release issued earlier today.

In recognition of his significant contributions to Canada’s space program, Colonel Jeremy Hansen has revealed his intention to explore new professional opportunities starting in September 2026, while concurrently serving as a reservist with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Hansen, alongside NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, participated in the Artemis II mission, where they circled the moon in April.

Making the announcement regarding his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency, Hansen personally shared on social media that after 32 years of military service and 17 years as an astronaut with the CSA, including the memorable experience of flying around the moon on Artemis II, he will be transitioning from his full-time role at the agency. However, he emphasized that this transition should not be viewed as a departure, as his dedication to supporting Canada’s progress in the space sector remains unwavering. The Royal Canadian Air Force will facilitate his shift into a reservist position, allowing him to explore new avenues of contributing to Canada’s space initiatives.

Hansen, recruited in 2009 alongside David Saint-Jacques, completed his astronaut candidate training in 2011. He has a background in working at NASA mission control and underwent extensive training leading up to the Artemis II mission.

Reflecting on his experiences during the Artemis II mission, Hansen expressed his admiration for various aspects, such as the visual sights and physical sensations of space travel. However, he highlighted that the human connection experienced during the mission was the most profound for him.

Minister Melanie Joly, responsible for economic development in Quebec regions, praised Hansen’s accomplishments, noting his historic participation as the first Canadian in a lunar mission, which has inspired generations of Canadians and elevated Canada’s standing in space exploration.

Following Hansen’s retirement, the Canadian Space Agency will have three active astronauts: David Saint-Jacques, Joshua Kutryk, and Jenni Gibbons. Gibbons played a crucial role in mission control during the Artemis II mission and continues to contribute significantly to NASA’s endeavors. Kutryk is slated to journey to the International Space Station in September as part of Crew-13.

In closing his retirement announcement on social media, Hansen expressed gratitude to the Canadian Armed Forces, the CSA, NASA, international partners, and his family for their support, thanking all Canadians for their belief in the potential of the country’s achievements in space exploration.
