“TransLink’s BRT Project Gains Momentum Amidst Previous Setbacks”

In 2018, Metro Vancouver experienced a series of setbacks in TransLink’s plans. The proposed light rail system in Surrey was scrapped after Mayor Doug McCallum’s opposition, with a new plan for a SkyTrain to Langley City proposed instead. Similarly, a B-Line project in West Vancouver was halted at Park Royal due to public concerns over parking space loss. Furthermore, despite deliberations and consultations, the exploration of mobility pricing to fund transit was abandoned due to perceived lack of political support.

TransLink has initiated consultations for its latest project, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), aiming to enhance transit services with dedicated lanes, increased frequency, and reliability. CEO Kevin Quinn emphasized the benefits of BRT during a recent event in Surrey, advocating for the service to business leaders.

While awaiting funding from higher government levels, TransLink and Metro Vancouver mayors have endorsed the BRT project, which has undergone years of planning and consultation. The challenge lies in overcoming potential public and political opposition that has stalled previous projects.

Mayors along the proposed BRT routes express cautious optimism, acknowledging challenges in implementation. Discussions in various municipalities, such as Langley Township and District of North Vancouver, revolve around balancing bus lanes with existing traffic lanes. The need for public input and trade-offs, including potential lane reductions, is emphasized to ensure the success of the BRT project.

Despite local politicians’ support, the project’s progress hinges on securing capital funding from higher government levels. TransLink estimates a three-year timeline for completing the three proposed BRT routes once funding is secured. The consensus among local politicians is the importance of increased government investment in transportation infrastructure to meet growing demands and maximize public transit usage.
