Canadian speed skater Courtney Sarault secured the nation’s seventh medal at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics by claiming the bronze in the women’s 500 meters short track event on Thursday.
Sarault, hailing from Moncton, New Brunswick, made a remarkable comeback in the final lap, surpassing her Dutch competitor Selma Poutsma with a finishing time of 42.427 seconds.
Reflecting on her performance, Sarault stated, “I never give up until the end. Despite struggling with turns, I persisted and fought my way to the bronze position on the outside track, leaving everything on the ice.”
CBC Sports analyst Michael Gilday praised Sarault’s determination, highlighting her resilience and fierce competitiveness in the race.
Although the 500 meters was not Sarault’s forte, she dedicated herself to improving in the distance following discussions with her coach last summer.
Courtney Sarault of Moncton, N.B., won the bronze in the women’s 500m short track speed skating, showcasing a remarkable late surge to secure her first individual Olympic medal.
This marks Sarault’s second medal of the Games following her silver in the mixed team relay earlier in the week. She also achieved a significant milestone as the first Canadian from outside Quebec to claim an individual Olympic short track medal.
Expressing hope to inspire individuals from smaller provinces, Sarault, a Crystal Globe recipient and a top performer in the 500 standings, emphasized the significance of her achievement.
