Chloe Kim Soars to Halfpipe Finals in Winter Games

American snowboarder Chloe Kim advanced to the halfpipe finals at the Milano Cortina Winter Games with a commanding performance, positioning herself for a potential third consecutive gold medal. Kim, considered one of the top snowboarders in history, displayed high-altitude maneuvers on the sunny slopes of Livigno, earning a leading score of 90.25. Despite a shoulder injury sustained a month earlier, the 25-year-old showcased her skills, outperforming her competitors. Her closest rival, Sara Shimizu of Japan, trailed with a score of 87.50. Canada’s Elizabeth Hosking also secured a spot in the final after finishing eighth in the qualifiers.

During her second run, Kim attempted more challenging tricks but faced some instability on landings. However, her strong lead from the initial run secured her position. The halfpipe event involves athletes navigating a 22-foot-tall ramp and executing aerial stunts. Kim had previously clinched gold in the halfpipe at the Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Olympics, making her a formidable contender for a third consecutive victory.

Notably, no snowboarder, including the renowned Shaun White, has achieved three consecutive Olympic gold medals. Kim’s preparation for the Games was briefly disrupted by a training accident in Switzerland, requiring a two-week break from snowboarding. Despite the setback, Kim expressed confidence in her recovery, competing with the support of a shoulder brace.

Chinese rider Liu Jiayu, a silver medalist from 2018 and a five-time Olympian, encountered a crash during her run and had to be assisted off the course by medical personnel. Reflecting on the incident, Hosking emphasized the competitive nature of the sport while expressing concern for the well-being of fellow athletes.
